Steve Clarisse, founder of nForma, worked in the education industry for over 20 years as a primary school teacher. During these years, with the limited resources available for reporting and student data, Steve took it upon himself to explore and adapt software solutions to assist him. Steve’s colleagues quickly saw the potential of his work and also wanted to use the software, prompting his principal to approach him shortly after. A few years later he had over 90 customers he was servicing, marking the early foundation of what would become nForma. In 2006, a new curriculum framework called Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS), was to be implemented into all schools across Victoria. Steve did not have the technical expertise to update his system to meet the new requirements, so he turned to his brother who specialised in IT. They transformed their garage into an office and by the end of the year, the VELS compliant software was ready to be implemented into their schools. The brothers travelled all over Victoria to display their new technology where they obtained more than double the amount of clientele. Since then, this small two-person family business quickly expanded. nForma expanded from five modules to twelve, with a 13th on the way. The team outgrew their garage and moved into a business park, hiring nine additional employees to meet the growing demand. Despite the departure of Steve’s brother, the sense of family that defined nForma’s early days remains the basis of the company’s culture today.
